Question #4 10/14/09

Before the turn of the century work was very labor intensive. It included labor intensive work live manual work in the farming fields. Luckily at the turn of the century many inventors invented many things that would cut down the amount of labor a person would have to do on a daily basis. Also there were many inventions that were made to make living conditions more comfortable.

P.J. Parmitter & Sons were one of the first to contribute their technologies to the farming industry. There invent of the harrow allowed a farmer to dislodge debris while automatic drills would spread grain. Another great invention was the "header'' which used up to six horses to carry but would cut the top off the standing grain to obtain wheat. This saved both time and and effort that a farmer would have to put out which would give him much more time to lay back and be comfortable.


There are too many inventions to mention that made live easier at the turn of the century, so i am just going to mention the most important to me. I would like to start with the invention of the incandescent lightbulb by Mr. Edison. His invention allowed many people to continue day life at night, in fact with out this invention I most likely would not be able to complete this blog because I wouldn't be able to look at my notes. Another invention that I look as important is the telephone. This allowed people to communicate at a moments notice and was better the its predecessor "mail" which was very unreliable.


My views of technologies of today versus technologies of the turn of the century is that todays technologies are made for luxury, while yesterdays technologies were made to make life easier. So my view is that technologies of the yesterday were more valuable to people then technologies are to people of today.

Question 4

The modernization of ranching in the late 19th century in the United States was due to railroads, amounts of land, and controlled areas. By having large amounts of cattle being raised on a area of land that was contolled the rancher could feed the cattle to their likings to raise the quality of meat meaning higher price. After all of this was done this is when the railroads were introduced, which would send the cattle to packers. This both helped near-by farmers because the ranchers had to buy food for their cattle from them. Both the ranchers and farmers would attempt to work together so both could create a bigger profit for each other since many people in the original colonies wanted this beef.
